Dimpling

Dimpling is a process in which metal is deformed outwards, e.g. a piece of tubing is inserted through a round hole in a square plate. Both parts are then joined by turning over the edges of the pipe. This creates a quick, strong join that does not require the addition of any extra material. The term dimpling is also used to refer to the process of enlarging a hole in a flat sheet thereby creating a raised edge.
